Pre-Orientation

IDEA: Innovation, Discovery, Experience, Action

Innovation

The IDEA Pre-Orientation program will help bring out the inner innovator and entrepreneur in you! Whether you are interested in art, engineering, business, or the sciences, learn the answer to questions like “I have this great idea, now what? How can I start my own business? How can I help change the world?” Entrepreneurship activities at Washington University help students start ventures that have meaning for them and the people they serve. Students not only learn the tools of entrepreneurship, they have the opportunity to experience it every day in an interdisciplinary setting. Get a head start with IDEA activities featuring panel discussions from successful entrepreneurs including student business owners, a scavenger hunt around St Louis to visit successful ventures, working with a team on an idea to present at the final celebration event, and many chances to meet student and community entrepreneurs and innovators for both nonprofit and for-profit ventures.

Testimonials

Discovery

“I'm not in the business school, I don't own a business, and I don't know if I ever want to start a business, but I love brainstorming ideas and figuring out how to bring them to fruition. I.D.E.A. helped me get to know St. Louis, some of my peers, and campus, and it also allowed me to recognize that I have an entrepreneurial spirit.”
- S.S. - Arts & Sciences

“Idea bounce pre-o gave me the chance to make friends, adapt to college life, and explore the world of entrepreneurship in one week! I am studying mechanical engineering but through the pre-o, I feel a strong connection with the Skandalaris center and the business school. In what other pre-o do you get to eat lunch, dinner, and dessert at three different restaurants on the loop...with the owners?” - C.W. - Engineering

Experience

“Out of all my experiences during freshman year, the IDEA pre-orientation program stands out as one of my favorite. At IDEA, I forged friendships that have continued thorough the year, interacted with entrepreneurs from around St. Louis, and explored neighborhoods all over St. Louis. Plus, the food was great too! I would recommend IDEA to any incoming freshman irrespective of intended major.” - J.E. - Olin Business School
